SCOTT BOYER

For over 3 decades Scott Boyer has been a dominate male figure in the Richmond Area classical dance scene. As such he has co-directed The Richmond Ballet and The Concert Ballet of Virginia and performed as principal dancer in both companies. Long noted as a superior teacher and coach his training includes experience with studios and companies in Richmond, Chattanooga, Washington and New York with instruction from Stuart Sebastian at the Washington Ballet and from dance masters such as Melissa Hayden, Nina Papova, Douglass Wassels, Nels Jorgensen, Petrus Bosman and William Starrett.

LINDSAY HUDSON

Lindsay Rhyne Hudson began her dance career at Diane Hale School of Dance at age 3. At age 10 she joined The Concert Ballet of Virginia as a junior dancer in “The Nutcracker”. She continued with the company, rising through the ranks to Principal Dancer, performing in the company’s performance season of Repertory Galas and on tour in Virginia. Additionally, Ms. Hudson served as company Regisseur where she maintained the Ballet’s repertory and choreographed works for both the Senior and Junior companies. In 2004 she joined the teaching staff at Diane Hale School of Dance and taught as a guest artist in “Summer Dance” The Concert Ballet’s summer intensive class program.

AVERY DREW INGE

Avery Drew began dancing at Diane Hale School of Dance where she continued to dance throughout schooling.  In 2019 she began teaching with Dance Works in Newport News while attending Christopher Newport University. Her training includes a strong ballet background and a focus in Acrobatics and Musical Theatre.

Lindsay Hudson and Scott Boyer bring extensive performance and instruction experience to this new combined dance program, having worked together in The Concert Ballet of Virginia as performers, from staging, rehearsing and choreographing for the company and with experience from teaching in their respective studios. Dancers who have studied, worked and performed with this duo have assumed professional dance careers – particularly throughout the Richmond area – both creating their own dance studios and as teaching staff in Richmond Area studios.

DANCE ATTIRE

Ballet/pointe/variations- We encourage our female dancers to wear black leotards with pink tights and shoes, and male dancers white tops with black tights and shoes.
Other genres, we ask that dancers wear appropriate dance wear that allows them to move freely without concern.
Jewelry and excessive clothing should not be worn on the dance floor.

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is very important during our dance season. Not only is it difficult for a dancer to catch up, but it also makes it challenging for their classmates to learn choreography with empty places. Dancers need to attend their classes, especially second semester when we are learning choreography for our end of year showcase. Dancers that miss more than 5 classes second semester may be asked to sit that dance out.

DANCE ETIQUETTE

-Proper attire should be worn for all classes.

-Hair should be secured and out of your face when you enter the studio.

-No jewelry.

-No cell phones in the studio.

-Be on time! Classes will not wait for you and your body needs a proper warm up.

-Hydrate and fuel your body before class.

-Use the restroom prior to class. You don’t want to miss any of the fun!

-No talking during class. If you have a question, please raise your hand when your instructor is done going over the combination.

-Remember your teacher is there to help you and push you. If they ask something of you it’s because they want you to try something. Please do not say “I can’t” instead, give it a try!

Dance is supposed to be fun, but also a place where we learn! Be respectful to yourself and others by following simple dance etiquette!
